How do human rights defenders operate in a country where power “is captured by network of private interests”? Vanja Ćalović, the Executive Director of MANS - The Network for Affirmation of NGO Sector in Montenegro, tell us what happen to those who raise their voices and what is needed to fight those trying to silence them.
This interview was filmed in early November 2008 in Strasbourg, France, at the roundtable organized by the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights on the situation of human rights defenders. The gathering brought together 55 defenders from COE countries who shared their experiences of obstacles in their daily work of promoting human rights and pointed out to possible supportive actions. “Human rights defenders work on a wide range of issues. We must ensure that their work is not only protected, but supported by both national authorities and international organizations,” emphasized the Commissioner.
